What our Austria company report includes
Our Austria reports draw on sources including the Firmenbuch (Companies Register) administered by the regional commercial courts, the WKO Chamber of Commerce, the Justice Ministry's Edikt portal for insolvency proceedings, court records, FMA and Wiener Börse for listed entities, and direct in-country enquiry; fees may apply for certain records. Depth of any given section reflects what the subject company has filed and what is publicly retrievable at the time of the search. Findings are translated from German and presented in plain English.
Public access to EU beneficial-ownership registers ended with the Court of Justice of the EU ruling of 22 November 2022, which struck down general public access on privacy grounds; under the EU anti-money-laundering framework (AMLD6, Directive (EU) 2024/1640) the register is now open only to competent authorities, obliged entities, and persons able to demonstrate a legitimate interest.

Note on Austria data: Austrian GmbH and AG entities must file their Jahresabschluss with the Firmenbuch within nine months of year end. Size categories under the UGB (commercial code) determine the depth of filing: micro and small entities file abbreviated accounts; medium and large entities file the full Jahresabschluss with audit opinion. The Edikt portal publishes insolvency proceedings in real time and is the primary current-status source.
Why verify a Austria company?
Austria operates a thorough corporate transparency regime closely modelled on the German Handelsregister system but with its own administrative structure. The Firmenbuch is administered by the regional commercial courts (Landesgerichte) and captures every limited entity with comprehensive data on directors, shareholders, capital, registered office and articles of association. Every GmbH and AG must file annual accounts (Jahresabschluss) within nine months of year end. Updates and filings are processed through the courts and are typically current.
For most credit and procurement decisions on Austrian counterparties, registry and accounts data together provide a strong basis. The main practical dimension for overseas buyers is the size-category framework under the UGB (Unternehmensgesetzbuch, Austria's commercial code): micro and small GmbH entities file abbreviated accounts that omit turnover detail; medium and large entities file the full Jahresabschluss together with an auditor's opinion. The size threshold has recently been raised, increasing the number of entities qualifying for abbreviated filing. For credit decisions on smaller GmbH counterparties, our investigated reports seek consented financial detail.
Risk patterns we can identify in Austria reports include Konkurs (bankruptcy) and Sanierungsverfahren (reorganisation) proceedings published on the Edikt insolvency portal; Exekutionsverfahren (enforcement proceedings) records; BMF (Federal Ministry of Finance) tax-debt indicators; ÖGK social-insurance arrears; recent changes of Geschäftsführer; significant Stammkapital reductions; and non-filing of accounts beyond the statutory window. Austria's 2024 introduction of the FlexKapitalgesellschaft (FlexCo), a new legal form for start-ups, is captured where applicable.
